Request to adjust annual clean energy interim targets
PSE is aggressively pursuing renewable energy resources to serve our customers and comply with Washington state’s ambitious clean energy laws.
We remain committed to meeting the 2030 targets set by the Legislature; however, unforeseen conditions since our clean energy plan was filed in 2021 mean that our annual interim targets for 2024 and 2025 are out of reach absent making significant, expensive short-term clean energy purchases. These purchases raise costs for customers, without making any contribution to PSE’s long-term CETA goals.
These unforeseen conditions include intense competition for a limited amount of new renewable energy resources, rising demand for electricity, and two consecutive years of low hydroelectric generation, all impacting our near-term progress. As a result, we recently filed a petition with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission requesting to lower our interim targets from 59% in 2024 and 63% in 2025 to 48% for both years (2024 and 2025).
We remain committed to achieving the 2030 and 2045 goals in CETA; in July we issued a request for bids to supply up to 2.3 million annual megawatt hours of non-emitting resources by 2030. This is the largest procurement request in PSE’s history and in the Pacific Northwest.
Energy is an essential service. Our customers depend on us to deliver clean energy while ensuring that costs are kept reasonable, reliability is not compromised, and there is tangible, lasting benefit.
